delivery room for "chinese vacation"

Today is the official day of the birth of "Chinese Vacation." I am like a proud papa in the waiting room. Please go to your record stores and demand that they order 5 copies. You will be helping to make the world a better place. If they already have 5 copies then buy them all and give them to members of congress and various flight attendants you may come across. It really helps if you go in to your favorite record store and do this. Many stores don't pay attention to you when you are just on a little label like 98 pounder records. Please help me make the big guys take notice with a slingshot to the forehead of Goliath. This is a day that will go down in infamy. We will make the world a safer place. You are now deputized to be on the 98 pounder posse. Yeah I said posse P-Diddy. God speed you beautiful freaks and thanks for your help!
Steven jj Poltz (male nurse for a day)
p.s. by signing your name below you will be allowed to carry a gun and a badge
and demand record stores to order my new c.d. Just don't tell the cops I said so.

I'm doing my part! The disc should be in stock... now I must track sales.

Who's in charge of distributing firearms? I would like something in a large caliber, semi-auto, preferabley ceramic to avoid detection.

i'm an uncle of this little creation and i'm buying 10 copies to give to my friends. i'm all for slaying goliath AND making the world a better place. its so cool being a member of a real posse-now i know how jesse james and jay z feel like.
proud to be a 98 pounder--i'm off on my own chinese vacation

Posted by: david leach at September 23, 2003 12:54 PM

A gun would be sorta cool, but the badge!!
That's what I want! Something shiny that immediatly warrants respect. I could be the kick ass - assertive woman I always wanted to be! Drop down and give me Twenty!

Congrats Steve! See you at the Fez!

Posted by: Ash at September 23, 2003 1:28 PM

OK, sounds cool but I want to see if I can just trade in the badge and get two guns 'cus there are a lot of idiots on my street that have the need to get their brand new midlife-crises, lawyer driving, $40k yuppy Harleys up to about 90MPH when they go by my house! (oops, is this thing still on?)
That said, I'll start droppin' the word at my local music haunts... Chinese Vacation is a great record! Nicely done.

Posted by: Lokster at September 23, 2003 2:51 PM

Weapons....naw just my kung fu in action will do. The word is out and I'm headed down to get a million copies and go on a chinese vacation and......
congrats Steve
Keep it wild and crazy!

We are anti firearms out here in Perth Western Australia but we love a bit of old fashion biffo. Might need some too at most record stores around here "Steve Who?" better get you r ass out this way and do another show or two, still remember the last from Burwood too many years ago now.

Posted by: Marty at September 23, 2003 5:34 PM

My copy is shipping soon from I'll go tell my local record store to get it in too so that I can force it down my friends ears!

Congratulations Steve! Best wishes.

I kevin moran, do solemnly swear, to scour, hunt, and scold any record store that does not have chinese vacation in stock, or on order, and to purchase any copies that may be on the shelf...or ask the nice clerk to order me 7.5 copies, and that i will come back next week to pick them up, but dont really come back, but instead, tell my family, my friends, co-workers, and total strangers to go into the store and buy them or i will use the guns that steve gave me to prove a point that word of mouth and good music still prevail and that under no cirmumstance let negative emotion take over and use the guns for bad....amen.

Posted by: kemo at September 24, 2003 1:47 AM

I can't wait to hear the new cd, especially with Kim Richey on backing vocals!!! See you at Victors, and at Humphreys, too....Derek

Posted by: derek at September 24, 2003 7:11 AM

Steve-A-Rooni!!!!! Just a quick note from your Canadian buddy to say that you are the Funk Phenomenon. Don't you forget that. Aiight?

Posted by: Evil_Peter at September 24, 2003 7:22 AM

Just one gun? Can I have two. I want elephant tusk grips and chrome plated frame. I get a badge too? So sweet! Last time I was running around with a badge and a gun on my belt I got arrested. If being in your posse let me carry again I am all over that!

Can I carry a nightstick too? I would use it to smack down store clerks that look at me funny or laugh when I tell them to order Chinese Vacation or Else..

I feel having a nightstick can keep people interested in what I say. Does that seem wrong?

Later.. Ted *from your worm town chapter*

Posted by: Nikonman at September 24, 2003 7:43 AM

All day at school I wish I was home so I could listen to Chinese Vacation...sometimes I think I like it too much, thank you. I feel deputized...but Nikonman you can have my gun too if that would help...I could do the talking and you could come in with guns blazing if they don't give my words enough credit, I know for everything plus Christmas I'm going to try and give this to everyone I can, I think it will be funny when they all tell each other what they got from me...I have some Wedding gifts to make up for come to think of it;) Cool cool.

Posted by: Featherwait at September 24, 2003 5:59 PM

Congratulations on finally getting the album out!!

Now I just have to search all over Australia to find it!!

Posted by: Marie at September 24, 2003 8:21 PM

I got it the day after it came out and I love it!!!! Dig the TLC cover too! :)

Posted by: Martin at September 25, 2003 11:22 AM

Steve!! Ya fuckin' pussay!! Gimme my badge!!

I bought 10 at Lou's and anyone who likes flowery music like yours and hasn't heard of you gets one.

PS - gootjab on the record. I wanna wreck it. Maybe that's what I'll do with the gun.

Posted by: Pix at September 25, 2003 2:29 PM

For us poor fans in far flung New Zealand Steve's new record won't hit the stores until who knows when.

Thank God for, who are rushing me Chinese Vacation as I type.

Bring it on!

Badges?! We don't need no stinkin' badges!!

Seriously, if you're gonna buy the CD buy it from You can still hassle the record stores anyway.

BTW, was it poodle or pork?

Posted by: Marc at September 26, 2003 6:05 AM

Ok so I bought only 2 so I know I still have to prove myself to be in this "posse" but I WILL attend all 3 New York shows and bring people along who will eventually buy CD's. Steve you are awsome and it was nice to see you play again, I felt at home listening to all the San Diego songs! Thanks!

Hey yo, way to go.......I have done more than my part. I have contacted EVERY SINGLE music retailer small and large and requested 5+ copies. I have been promotin the shit outta Chinese Vacation at each and every show I dj. I host/dj and play an all acoustical jam every Tuesday night, and every Friday and Saturday night I dj/host karaoke where if my word of mouth doesn't reach (and trust me I gotta big mouth), my microphone does!!! It kinda goes a little someting like this, on mic of course,
"go steve it's Chinese Vacation's birthday,go buy the record now, tell 10 friends his name, which by the way is Steve Poltz he's my buddy, he gives me that tingly in the pants your copy today" and next up we have....

Posted by: Tiffster at September 26, 2003 7:06 PM

Here's to a man who managed to elevate the kazoo to a new level and make the word menudo work for a punchline. It's a very inspired album that any record store would be foolish not to keep in stock. My most enthusiastic best wishes and congratulations.

Get out the cigars - it's a baby CD!
Congrats Steve, all the way from Melbourne, Oz

Posted by: Michael at September 26, 2003 7:44 PM

When I saw that the album was finally out, I started checking various places here in Melbourne, Australia. Alas, I found no one who carried it. Ordering from Amazon would've ended up costing a lot of money.

Then I thought of your wonderful Aussie tour manager, Milan. I saw him at the Jason Mraz concert and recognised him from your show at the Corner Hotel a few months ago, and ended up having a chat with him at the time. Sent him an email Thursday night, and he hooked me up with a little shop here in Melbourne called Disc Entertainment (, which I think he's involved with (?)

Anyway, I ordered it from them online around 1 o'clock on Friday morning, and had it in my hands this afternoon (Monday).

What's that you say? Why tell such a long story? Well, it might come in handy for those in Australia looking for somewhere to get it. Milan said they only have a few left, and that the album won't be released in Australia until early next year. It's AU$29.95 and $3 to have it sent through normal mail within Australia.

Anyway, Steve, I love the album. I would love to tell all my friends to buy it, but it's very hard to get here! Get another shipment out to Milan! Between about three people, we've got about 20 people listening to Jason Mraz. If we can manage that for him, I'll bet I can get at least 30 friends getting your album (the Mraz album has been my standard birthday present this year; let's make Chinese Vacation the standard from this day forward!)

Oh, and is "Chances" the song you played at the first Jewel Spirit Tour show (at the Palais Theatre, Melbourne)? I remember you telling us a story about hearing the word "hissyfit" for the first time in Melbourne...

Come back soon, and get your album out here! Now!

Posted by: Johannes Schmidt at September 29, 2003 8:54 AM

i too got my cd from milan but i bought it from his shop in chapel street on grand final day (across from prahran twon hall).

10 chances was the song he sang at the palais some five odd years ago and its a corker as he wrote it in sydney on that tour.

however, i am a bit disappointed in the new cd as its only 40 odd minutes long. i thouhgt steve would've had it jam packed with other songs but who knows, they might have been saved for the new rugburns cd he always seems to be going on about.

Shut up, Dung.

Posted by: Westy at October 1, 2003 7:54 AM

Westy always knows exactly what to say.

I bet his little whinging will push the next Australia tour back about 6 months.

Posted by: Ms. P at October 1, 2003 9:14 AM

Whinging, Dana? :-p

Posted by: nitpicker's r me at October 1, 2003 10:14 AM

re: shut up, dung

my reply to that is no :D

i don't know about my whinging pushing steve's tour date back. there's news he may be back sometime soon, so there. if not, i might just have to get my arse over there in my break at the end of this year.

and jack johnson is also coming back in november. that's two tours in half a year.
