Rockin' the Suburbs

The other night I played a house concert and they had to move it outside because there 130 folks there rockin' the suburbs. The girl on my left opened the show and was fantastic. Her name is Rhiannon and she strummed a guitar and sang and people loved it. The mohawk and the Led Zepplin guy were in the audience pretending the chairs were a mosh pit. It was like Woodstock 8 or something. The Canyonfolk house concert throwers (Bill and Shirlee) were great hosts and sure know how to throw a party.
The Padres are in the playoffs against the dreaded Cardinals. I have developed a hatred toward any red birds I see anywhere at any time and shoot them at will with my rifle I bought at Wal Mart. I am going to the game today and the Pads are already down by 1 game. If they don't win today I am canceling all future shows. Why am I up at 4 in the morning typing this? I guess because I am nervous about maybe pitching in today's game. My fastball tops out at 40 mph and my change up is 39. I'm not fooling anybody up there at the plate but I'm all we've got. I have friends in Dtroit and Minneapolis that are rooting for the Twins and the Tigers and my Dad is rooting for the Dodgers and we are all losing our respective series. Oh well, it could be worse- Lou D in Philly doesn't have a team in the playoffs. I feel for him.
Sincerely,
A Guy with a Gun

We don't own any guns but if we did there would be a dead cardinal in our yard. For 5 days in a row a male cardinal has been banging into our kitchen window. We actually video taped it. I had to leave the house to study because it was so annoying! We have tried every thing to scare it off. It just keeps coming back. It is one stupid bird. Our guess is that the bird sees it's reflection in the window and thinks it has competition from another male. We do see a female close by. This cardinal is a retard...ha!
are you gonna play songs at dana's? 'cause I think there might be a game on at the time. maybe we can move the t.v. and you can multitask...
see you soon.
I feel for you and your team, GO TEAM and for god sake Poltzy, get some sleep!
Tomorrow I'm going to the Florida Panthers vs. Boston Bruins game (YAY HOCKEY)! We Floridaians will do just about anything for some cold ice and a good air conditioner. It's pathetic. I did go to a Florida Marlins game this season. They lost that game and BAD. Maybe there is something in the air?!
YOU ROCK, thanks for posting a great pic and story. Glad you had FUN!
Just curious if you'll be bringing your gun to the show in Arlington,VA....your shows have always been entertaining, but the use of a rifle during a show could take it to the next level. A cover of AC/DC's "For Those About to Rock" followed with the 21 Gun Salute....now this has potential....and you thought Waterfalls was a cool cover, I am sure your local wal-mart could provide you the other 20 guns you'll need to pull this off.
I just make a mental note not to wear anything to the show that might resemble a Cardinal....I'm having flash backs to the Dick Cheney and his hunting accident.
Steve,
At least you have a team in the playoffs and they don't play in the same farging division as the Yankees and the Bosox. Oh well, at least the Jays finished ahead of Boston this year.
As a tribute to you, I will cheer for the Padres this year. If the series turns around, you can credit my karma...

dear mr. ben folds-
first, i'm glad you dropped the five part of your name. it was kind of dorky and pseudo, if you will. this isn't 1941. is it because you are all cool mr. solo artist now? everyone thinks they have to become a solo "artist" after their band helps them to create a name and presence. egomaniacs!
honestly, i really don't like the way you cover elliott smith songs. elliott was an artist that is difficult to cover. it takes balls for you to pound out some hack ass version of 'say yes' and think it is a tribute to one of the greatest songwriters in contemporary music. dude, c'mon!
there is this guy from san diego named steve poltz. now this guy knows how to cover someone else's song. in fact, the only requests i ever make of him are covers. not that his songs are lesser, but i really enjoy his interpretations of others' music and how he makes the songs his own. you may want to check him out sometime soon. you could learn something.
go mets (or dodgers)!
thank you,
mitch
You know I don't really give a shit about baseball... but I hate the Cardinals. Therefore, I'll be rooting for your team. Go Pads.
Jezzz... you look old steve!!!
Did Ben Folds really do an Elliott Smith cover?! THE SHAME! He's kinda weird & yucky. Elliott is one of my favorite all time musicians and singers (and unfortunately he died on my birthday, October 21st). I would be curious to hear how Poltzy would do a cover of his song, I would bet it's a far cry better than ol' Ben Folds. He should just fold already that Ben.
Happy weekend to you all!
Mindy
hi mindy-
i've heard a song or two of elliott's that ben has covered. shame is right! ben is totally weird and yucky for sure.
i remember october 21, 2003 very well, strangely. i bet steve does too.

The cardinal is the Indiana State Bird. Don't shoot any while you're here. For your sake. I think they're all a buncha peckers.
We went to different Schools together Poltzy. I too share your contempt and distane for those featherd #@*&$! in red. Gotta beat dem Birds today! You here it alot in sports BUUUT, Today really is a must win. And they will!!! btw, I just caught your One on One interview with Jane Mitchell (for the 3rd time), And discided your my newest hero. Sinscerely Advocate for the cruel and inhumane treatment of Cardinals
I remember the night Elliott died too, Mitch. 3 am phone calls and whatnot. Such sweet sappiness.
3-nil Friars, top o the 6th.
the cardinal is the state bird of virginia too, where you played tonight/last night. you can't avoid them...you'll be in new jersey soon though and metal mike piazza's theme song, bon jovi's wanted dead or alive, will be kicking in real soon...
Pads were successful in wiping out the Suppan variety of the Cardinal family. Today they will will attempt to place the Cartpenter Cardinal on the endangered spieces list, They will call upon the natural enemy of the Cardinal, The Western "Woody"pecker to help eraticate this airborn nuisance in red. GO PADS!
Sinscerely Cardinal Hater Coalition
I loved the song you sang on Sunrise on the Coast this a.m. It reminded me of a John Prine song. I will read the playlist to see what it was called. Thanks for a clever tune from Debbie in Chesapeake, VA
You look like Kid Rock in that pic....
