Me and The Padres got back together

tony-gw.jpg

Just like Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston. Or Angelina and Billy Bob. Me and The Padres are back together. Not that we ever broke up, but I was having a temper tantrum and wasn't talking to them for awhile. But I am now proud to say I have a bad case of baseball fever. See the statue above of Tony Gwynn? Well do ya punk? It's brand new at Petco Park and it's important to maike a pilgrimage for some good beisbol joo joo. The fact that I wasn't talking to them doesn't really make me a bad fan. I was still watching but I was complaining most of the time and grumbling like a seismic temblor. Does that mean I only like winners? How vacant of me. Not really- ya see, it just hurts me more than most people. I'm a sensitive artist wah wah wah.

Thanks for all the comments on the house concert thing below. (except for the one about patchouli on my balls). The gigs are pouring in with Lexington, Kentucky just booked for October 20th. I'm excited because there will be playoff baseball happening and a certain team that I won't mention for fear of jinxing them could be involved in this activity. You never really freaking know.
Sweet Jesus, you never really do now do you?

There are new episodes of The Hugh Thompson show up. In case you don't know about it click here http://techchannel.att.com/ Click on to the Hugh Thompson Show and peruse. There's a new episode up with Nanct Giles as the guest. She's amazing. I get make up a bunch of songs for the hi tech guests and generally have a good time.

That earthquake last night at 2:53 am scared the bejesus out of me and it was only a 3.5. My apartment was shaking and I thought it was going to be the big one. Heart beating fast, cat like reflexes, jumping up out of bed run outside only to fall back asleep and dream of welders on skyscrapers with flames leaping from gas tanks and scaffolds crashing down in dust clouds with nowhere to run.

Good Times,
Steve

In my best Obi One voice... "Come to New England, you want to come to New England". Great time of year man, I even have a 60 inch HDTV with the baseball package. Think about it... Westy is not around here anymore so you might enjoy yourself.

Posted by: handkusp at August 30, 2007 3:33 PM

I knew you couldn't stay away from your Pads...once a diehard fan, always one. It's like me and the 49ers...love them, even though they have really sucked it up over the past few years. But I still remember the glory years...the joy of a win over a friend or family member's favorite team and my utter glee as I rubbed it in...ahh...those were good times.

Posted by: wi1d_flour at August 30, 2007 3:48 PM

wait, not talking to someone = severing ties? rilly? hmmm, much to think about.

whatever steve, i think we all knew it was only a matter of time. glad to know you're back in the cheerleading section...or peanut gallery, whichever. man, is the ocean breeze getting to those snakes or what? they're suckin'...but see, i'm fickle. don't listen to me...oh WAIT! you don't! :-0

i just love this response from lizzie:
"jeff and calman don't tour during october. baseball play-offs make it way too complicated." (i shouldn't really put quotes on that one, but you get the picture). look at you! 20 oct in kentucky. have fun.

My son was born the same day Tony Gwynn signed with the Padres. I think that's cool...so does he. (my son, not Tony...but I bet Tony would think so if he knew.)

Posted by: traci at August 30, 2007 6:04 PM

that's cool. i love tony.
i need to go back to the hall of fame to see his stuff in cooperstown.

Posted by: steverino at August 30, 2007 6:12 PM

I just imagined you running out of your apartment....totally out of breath....gas lines are exploding, hyrdrants erupting and there you are explaining to anyone who will listen, the story behind your "Bad Lungs" and how this earthquake is as bad on your lungs as Sewing Machine on 3 glasses of Iced Tea....then of course the conversation would swing to the Padres as the earth opens up and almost swallows you whole....and the only thing you can think as you fall to the center of Sandy Eggo, is Jewel and the fact that she "beleives in angels."...and at this point in your life, that's not a bad idea.

Posted by: Jim at August 30, 2007 6:43 PM

By the way Steve, who's the dude stalking you to the right of the statue....looks like he's planning to take you out or something.....hope you didn't accidentaly tap for foot 3 times underneath the bathroom stall....I've heard that can cause some problems in a public setting.

Posted by: Jim at August 30, 2007 6:48 PM

I too must heed the call of Cooperstown. Good to have you back Steve.

Posted by: beebeep at August 31, 2007 4:50 AM

Good lord. When are people going to learn not to book you for living room shows during playoff season?! The poster boy for adult ADD can only concentrate on so many things at once! ;-)

Posted by: Frag at August 31, 2007 6:03 AM

Earthquakes and me don't mix. I still remember the 7.0 one back in 1999 that got me out of bed...just one of the reasons I don't live in Cali anymore.

Three hits in a row
Three hits in a row
Why can't we get three hits in a row?
It's a long long season
Give me one good reason
For not getting three hits in a row

Hey Coach Quintera sometimes I long
For the days of old, dontcha know?
What if we had Floyd Chiffer on the mound
We'd keep them from getting three hits in a row
What about Dave Edwards and Tim Pyznarski?
What if we had Fred Kahaulua on the mound
Pitching to Jody Lansford?

Chorus

What if we still had Paul Dade on the team
Or Barry Evans dontcha know?
Or Dennis Blair pitching on the mound
Broderick Perkins could bring them around

Chorus

Do you remember Rick Sweet or Doug Gwosdz?
Jim Wilhelm or Steve Mura?
Miguel Dilone or number 11 Enzo Hernandez
Who bequeathed number 11 to my good friend
Timmy Timmy Timmy Flannery

Chorus

O Coachy Bruce Bochy
Please come and save our team
You could make this whole night one bad dream
If we still had Ed Whitson on the mound
We'd keep them from getting three little runs

Chorus x2

the tony gwynn statue is nice, but it's no bob feller!
love affairs with baseball teams are difficult. as much as i love my indians, i'm just not sure how they feel about me. if they loved me back, could they put me through the joe borowski agony night after night?
i wish your pads the best of luck-unless, of course, they happen to face my tribe.

REV!? where ya been? :)

btw, Loki-boy is getting all the hand-delivered home-madey brownies with nuts!

coop--

I've been summering with the Cumsteens in Oxnard.

Posted by: Rev Spankalot at September 3, 2007 10:27 AM

Rev!
Cumsteens in Oxnard....sounds like fun!

i must say you came to mind as our entourage invaded the crooked kilt in downtown paso robles last weekend.

no, i did not wear a bathing suit top for the ceremony; it wasn't HOT. the weather was actually a welcome respite from tucson summer heat.

4 couples asked if i'd consider marrying them! :-0 so, what do YOU charge?

Posted by: coop at September 3, 2007 12:14 PM

Male-Female: 3 fried chickens and a Coke.

Male-Male: Hot dogs. Armour hot dogs.

Female-Female: Carpet Fresh.

Posted by: Rev Spankalot at September 3, 2007 3:37 PM

Rev! You're cheap! Did I mention that I hand-craft boas for each member of the couple and write a touching, personal ceremony tailor-suited to proclivities of "bride" and "groom?" (e.g., snake handling is extra).

For the record....that'd be a lotta fried chickens and a few hot dogs...but no carpet fresh.

Let's see, using your rubric as a guideline, I must say I'm inclined to follow:

Male-Female: 1 lb. Fried okra, 1 gal. gumbo, 1 liter diet coke

Male-Male: 2 Sonoran hot dogs (Hebrew Nationals, OF COURSE!), 1 chocolate flan, pitcher prickly pear margaritas

Female-Female: bouquet of succulents, 1 lb. Nag Champa incense, and a pedicure.

Steve,
Active X and Pretty Pretty girl Nancy Giles...that gggggggggGEEK Hugh Thompson....you're brilliant. I've been looking for a new series this fall and think I've found it. What a HAPPY show. Great band and great to watch you...and to hear you laugh. I am a MAC user...accidently tossed my itunes program trying to download a new version. Maybe watching this show will improve my computer intelligence but I think it's gonna be great for the music. Well done,
L.

Glad to see you and the Padre's have mended fences. Are you still good with the Charger's? That Jet's song from a few years back was awesome but in hindsight might have been a bit premature. I blame Scott and BR for that one even though the game falls squarely on ex coach MartySchottenheimer. Steve, you get off absolutely scott free because it was truly a really great song.

I'd like a bag of peanuts, please.

Posted by: Rev. Spankalot at September 10, 2007 7:23 AM

good lord - i didn't want to be RIGHT about you leaving town when the pads needed you the most. what a bunch of pansies - getting beaten down by colorado of all the loser teams in the league. down 3 steve - and you've got end of sept travel. that's it - it's gonna be your fault when we are left without ball in october. thank goodness they took my birthday night off, i couldn't stand another loss. they've given me ALMOST as much grey hair as you have on your shaggy head this season.

regardless, i love them and will stand by those darn losers until the end.

cheers to a late september miracle....

Hey Steve -
Good Luck to the Pads. Seeing Tony G next to you I have to tell you that as a kid I spent my summers in Hawaii visting my grandparents. Why is that relevant? Becasue I still have a Hawaii Islanders (the Pads AAA farm club in the 70's) program with Tony G's autograph across his picture and a his broken bat from the same game.

Eat you heart out Steve!

Posted by: Scott Simon at September 24, 2007 3:27 PM

Where are you Steve? We need your words of wisdom and stories from the road.

Posted by: shaeffer holt at September 26, 2007 11:21 AM

I think Milton Bradley needs to listen to some Poltz wisdom.

Then maybe he wouldn't get so mad and hurt his leg.

Or maybe Stevy can teach Milt some yoga.

Posted by: Reverend Spankalot at September 27, 2007 9:14 PM

6-6, top of the 10th.

Steverino, do you need your fingernails to play the guit-box? If so, please don't bite them.

I guess toenails are ok, since yer a yoga fella.
