I can't wait for beisbol!

playballpic.jpg

Look, I know the Superbowl is this Sunday but I am excited for the baseball season. With apologies to Westy and Dr. Leach (for their beloved Pats pronounced PATES rhymes with gates, are in the big bowl)

But the grass is growing and spring will be here soon and pitchers and catchers will be reporting to the warm weather states for the ritual of spring training. My dear friend Westy aka Joseph Patrick Daly commissioned my father to write a baseball poem. Listen to my Pops read the poem below.

Listen Here Peeps

Play ball

The season. It’s almost here.
Hotdogs and peanuts and cheering and beer.
The excitement is mounting, what more can I say?
Halleluja brother your team’s on the way.

Many players are leaving, some won’t be back.
But new ones are coming to pick up the slack.
Will our team be greater or will it be less?
We’ll just wait and see and hope for the best.

It’s hard to imagine old heroes are gone
We’ll adjust to the new ones and cheer them on.
It’s not easy you know in many cases
to welcome home all the bright new faces.

It takes more than sluggers to stay in the lead
It takes pitching and fielding and great running speed
It takes training and practice and practice some more
It takes something else called “esprit de corps.”

We all want to win, but some have to lose,
so we’ll either be cheering or singing the blues.
It’s so exciting we’re beginning to itch,
we can hardly wait for the very first pitch.

Tension is mounting, we’ll cheer for our team.
Will they have what it takes to fulfill our dream?
We’re so excited for the umpire’s first call,
when he finally lets loose with a hearty, “play ball!”

See ya in Arizona Padre peeps,

cereals

flakesfam.jpg

My dad was having a little writers block a couple of months ago so I suggested he just write about anything. I told him he should write a poem about his favorite cereal and he did. I really had fun tweaking this one. The picture is from when we first moved to Holliston street in Pasadena, California from Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada. My Ma ( Wini) n Pa and my sister Kath. Listen to Joe Poltz talk cereal below.

Listen Here

cereals

speaking of cereals
they come in all sizes and makes
but the best for my money
is old fashioned corn flakes
the flakes are so crispy
and so downright neat
just add milk and some sugar
and the taste can't be beat

you may laugh at my choice
for a light tasty luncheon
but none can compare
with these flakes i am crunching
corn flakes oh corn flakes
don't ever run out
as long as i have them
i'll sing and shout

My Father Waxes Poetic

pop23.jpg

On Christmas morning I woke up early and my father read me this poem he wrote. I recorded it in our kitchen and I thought you might enjoy listening to him read it. Leave a message for Joe Poltz down below.

Listen Here

when a soldier dies

when a soldier dies in some far off land
it's so hard for his loved ones to understand
why did he have to leave them behind
oh why did fate have to be so blind
in a wooden box his body lies
when a soldier dies

when a soldier dies in some foreign field
and they ship him home on his battle worn shield
home where his family sighs and mourns
wondering why from their lives he's been torn
trying to reason amid their sighs
when a soldier dies

when a soldier dies in a terrible war
amid all the gunfire blood and gore
wondering in his final moments of life
was it worth all the suffering hardship and strife
was he fighting for truth or was it all lies
when a soldier dies

when a soldier dies many lives are torn
his family and friends at his graveside mourn
they call him a hero who died in the dust
but often we wonder if the cause was just
was his death worth all the moaning and cries
when a soldier dies

2005 (I'm gonna make a big deal)

mentroy.jpg

Here is a song for ya'll.

Listen Here

people were sleeping in the gutter
looking for homemade apple butter
screaming happy happy nude year
drinking champagne and warm beer
bittersweet memories of the past year
lets fill this year with cheer
lets make it a big deal

i'm gonna make a big deal
i'm gonna make a big deal baby
i'm gonna make a big deal
2005
2005

the football teams were warring on the television
someone told me the chargers won their division
i was busy cooking sausages and prancing aboot in my leiderhosen
someone threw a frisbee like a record into my window
and the vinyl disc landed on a possum
everyone made a big deal

i'm gonna make a big deal
i'm gonna make a big deal baby
i'm gonna make a big deal
2005

lets stay alive
